Search Engine Optimizaton (“SEO”) is a term that is used both correctly and incorrectly to describe the overall process that results with a website being found on Page 1 of a search engine.
Narrowly defined, SEO means creating content on a website that is specifically designed for the searches that are being performed so that the page of content is attractive to a search engine when that particular search is performed.
More broadly defined, SEO is the plethora of individual tasks that collectively result in a webapage or website showing up on Page 1 of Google or some other search engine.
In the broad definition SEO includes the following tasks:
- Technology Selection
- Content Creation
- Link Management
- Traffic Management
The very first thing that must be done is to select a technology for building a website that has a content management system (CMS) that makes it easy to add new content to the website. Adding content on a regular basis is critical to the overall process of SEO because there is a much greater interest in ‘fresh’ or ‘new’ content and the search engines give greater priority and importance to content that is current. If it is a difficult or cumbersome task to add content to a website then you will not do it as often as you otherwise would and should. Therefore the first technology decision should be selecting a CMS that is easy to use.
The second most important aspect of your decision on a technical platform for your website is whether or not it is attractive to Google and the other search engines. Simply put, some website CMS platforms are more ‘Google Friendly’ than others. Word Press is the CMS that is considered to be the ‘gold-standard’ for both ease of use and search engine friendliness. While there are other CMS platforms that are as Google Friendly as Word Press there are none that are better in this respect.
The third most important aspect of your decision on a technical platform is whether or not the platform can deliver the functionality that you desire. This includes the look-n-feel element along with the more specific aspects of doing the things you need your website to do. If cost is a concern, as it is with the majority of businesses, this is often where compromises are made. The more unique and custom your vision is for your website the greater the cost associated with creating the site. Word Press is highly customizable, however, there are many themes that are available that make customization easy and inexpensive, up to a point.
For all of the above reasons we have selected Word Press as the CMS platform for our services and we find that it is very effective.
Creating content is the single most time consuming and expensive part of any digital marketing campaign. SEO always centers around content and it is true that you can create horrible content and get it onto Page 1 of Google, but, then no one will pick up the phone and call. Content must be both SEO oriented as well as quality driven because ultimately, if the consumer does not ‘connect’ to what you have written and feel compelled to take an action then your content is worthless.
The amount of content that you must create to get onto Page 1 of Google is dependent upon the amount of competition you have in your niche market. The more competition that more content that will be required.
